RHEAP provides Iraqi refugees with ESL lessons, tutoring, and a half hour of health education covering subjects such as mental health, nutrition, and navigating the US health care system. The kids attend a separate program. They participate in healthy-living activities conducted by volunteer teachers, discuss the challenges of adjusting to their new lives, and attend homework lab where volunteers help with schoolwork.
Volunteers are vital to the successes of the RHEAP program. Tutors provide participants the opportunity to practice English and increase confidence in their ability to communicate in a different language. The children's program volunteers use a healthy living curriculum and their own creativity to make the evening fun and educational. They assist children to improve their English skills and with homework that their non-English speaking parents are unable to help with. Certified ESL Instructors may also be needed to conduct one-hour beginning, intermediate, or advanced ESL lessons using curricula provided by RHEAP staff.
Volunteers do not need tutoring exerience. We provide training and materials. Certified ESL Instructors are more than welcome to apply. Anyone who is an expert in a certain are (mental health, nutrition, first aid, etc.) is also welcome to apply.
Please email email@example.com expressing your interest in the program. We will forward a volunteer application form to you and schedule an orientation date.
