Descripción de la oportunidad de voluntariado

ABOUT EACS:

East African Community Services (EACS) was established in 2000 to provide culturally specific advocacy, information, referral and direct social services to Somali, Ethiopian, Eritrean and other refugees living in King County. Nearly 30,000 East African refugees call King County their home. Here at EACS we try to help the the help refugees and their families by providing them with the support, guidance, and skills they need to develop into a happy and prosperous community here in their new home, Seattle.

AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM:

The After School Program serves elementary and middle school students from Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Oromo by providing homework help and engaging activities to stimulate learning outside of the classroom. The program provides homework help and tutoring with a volunteer tutor. The After School Program meets from 4-6pm at the New Holly campus, Monday - Thursday.

After School Program Goals:

  • Provide a culturally appropriate learning space and community for East African students to learn and grow
  • Provide an inclusive educational environment for all learning styles. We encourage students to work one-on-one with a tutor, to work independently, and/or to learn together by teaching each other
  • Improve students' performance in school by increasing attendance, improving Reading and Math grades, and improving standardized test scores

Tutoring Duties:

While working with this great group of kids, your main duties would be reviewing homework material with students and assisting when necessary, supervising enrichment time (at EACS we have books, games, and crafts available for students after they have completed their homework), and being a mentor and friend to the kids. This is a great opportunity for high schoolers or college students who need service learning hours. If you're interested in education, youth development, social policy, anthropology, international students, and/or human rights, this could be a valuable experience for you and the student you tutor!

Please email volunteer@eastafricancs.org if you are interested. Hope to hear from you soon!
