Volunteer at an Orphanage

Volunteering at an Orphanage requires giving lots love and affection, having patience, and understanding limitations of living in third world country - If you do not hold these traits (or you are unwilling to push yourself to develop them, this is not the type of volunteering for you.)

In general, orphanages vary in size and funding.

Orphanages are continually being added because of the always growing need to house extremely impoverished or orphaned children.

Because of this, most older orphanages are well funded w ith better facilities, more care-takers, and have organization and discipline among the children.

These well-funded homes ask that volunteers are friends of the children, help the children study, play with children, example good behavior, help cook and clean, teach English and other small tasks.

On the other hand, there are newer orphanages in much need of supplies and physical assistance such as chores, creating order and teaching discipline and giving lots of love.

For example, one newly opened orphanage in 2010 housed 10 + children and had only enough money to hire 1 adult or "house mother."

Experienced mothers and fathers (or other previous care-takers) would be highly appreciated for this type of placement. They are more likely to understand the hardship of parenting with limited supplies and time, handle the chaos, and hopefully aid the house and house mother in adding order and developing other basic foundations needed for a healthy home.

Where will I stay while volunteering?

You can either stay at the monastery itself or a nearby hotel. Each orphanage has different room for volunteers. What will I eat?

As with most placements, the meals are typical Nepali Dhal and Bhat. If you need a break from the pattern, there are restaurants to be found in the area to provide a variety in your diet.
