Uganda Youth and Women's Effort Fighting AIDS (UYWEFA) is humanitarian NGO working to mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS. UYWEFA has established a vocational training center to help members of the community gain the various skills that will assist them in finding employment.
Through community research, UYWEFA has identified there is a particular demand for tailors in the community. With the help of various donors, such as Tools With A Mission (TWAM), UYWEFA has acquired a small vocational center and several singer sewing machines (mechanical and electrical). Two separate classes will be tough in the vocational center that will educate women who are struggling as the head of the household to provide for their families. A preliminary agreement has been made with local schools to provide school uniforms once people have been trained in tailoring to ensure the project has a sustainable income
The center is community-owned and therefore largely staffed by local volunteers. We are seeking the assistance of an international volunteer to supplement the skills of local volunteers and provide administrative and teaching support. This opportunity would suit someone who has experience in tailoring/sewing, administration, teaching and working with both youth and women and is looking to help develop a project from the grass roots. The ability to work with the community to develop the project is essential. Candidates will need adaptability, enthusiasm and patience.
All volunteers will be given the opportunity to continually develop through formal training sessions, observing professional practice and regular forums to discuss best teaching practice. All volunteers will receive HIV/AIDScounseling training prior to the opening of the school and background checks will be performed to ensure the safety of youth and women registered at the center.
Teaching staff will meet twice prior to opening the schools to coordinate their term plans. They will then meet with the community to discuss learning needs for the students and discuss the proposed curriculum.
·Start date is flexible, however, volunteers will be asked to commit to one term (3 months).
·Language and cultural lessons will be provided.
·A home stay will be organized by the organization for a small fee.
·Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate on many other projects that UYWEFA is currently implementing.
