The Community Environmental Center is in need of docents to share information to students and adults about environmental sustainable by giving tours of its EcoHouse. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with children, primarily ages 9-14, and will be interested in sustainability and environmental issues. All volunteers will be paired with an EcoHouse employee who will train them in the content of the EcoHouse and best practices for giving the full EcoHouse tour. Volunteers are requested to volunteer their time, from 9am-3pm, or from 12pm to 5pm one day a week (M-F). Weekend events are available for volunteers as well. Volunteer responsibilities are outlined below.
The EcoHouse is a mobile exhibit that teaches the importance of conservation. The ideas behind 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' should be used everywhere in our homes—the shower, our choice of light bulbs, heating and cooling, the cleaning products we buy, and the materials we use. Inside the EcoHouse students of all ages engage in interactive exhibits and a full audio tour that teaches what conservation and efficiency mean, what we can do in our own homes to live more sustainably, and why it's important for us to do so.
The EcoHouse travels to a new location in New York City every 2-3 weeks. The exhibit is open to the public and free for all visitors.
