Position Description:

The Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of Operations is responsible for ensuring that plans are executed and goals and objectives become reality. The ideal candidate is a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded leader with experience scaling an organization, leading an executive management team, and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. He or she manages all operational divisions at AMPHS National, and is responsible for overseeing operations in community engagement and community services. In this role, the candidate will work to improve the impact of the organization's medical and public health services and training programs, as well as guide and motivate volunteers to ensure that deadlines, goals, and plans are met to satisfaction. The COO will be able to keep the organization's mission in clear sight and deliver measurable, cost-effective results. The Senior Vice President of Operations and COO reports directly to the President & CEO.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Working in partnership with the President & CEO, create the strategic long-term plan and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it.
  • Serve as the internal leader of the organization:
    • Coordinate the annual operations plan and budget
    • Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the organization
    • Provide for all staff a strong leadership presence, with a strong open-door policy
    • Lead and manage the organization's vice presidents
    • Manage all program and services activities within the organization:
      • Increase key impact measurements
      • Ensure that all programmatic partners renew their contracts
      • Develop curriculum, tools, and training that meet cost guidelines
      • Increase community partnerships and alliances
      • Ensure active participation among all community partners

Qualifications:

An advanced degree (Masters or above) in Business Administration, Public Administration, Social Work, Public Health, or a related discipline is preferable, although candidates specializing in other academic concentrations are welcome to apply. Candidates without an advanced degree should have significant work or leadership experience, a strong ability to think strategically, and demonstrated enthusiasm for social entrepreneurship. Other candidate attributes include:

  • Results—proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation; evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen, including successful P&L management and the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; problem-solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness
  • Capacity Building—ability to effectively build organization and staff capacity, developing a topnotch workforce and the processes that ensure the organization runs smoothly
  • Leadership and Organization—exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations and programs; ability to connect staff both on an individual level and in groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down, cultivate entrepreneurship, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed
  • Action-Oriented—enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary
  • General Management—thorough understanding of finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with a range of business functions and systems
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Powerpoint, Access, Word, Excel, and database management software.
