BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new refugee arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:

The Resettlement Services Program is the first point of contact for newly arrived refugees and offers support, guidance and counseling though all stages of resettlement. A crucial part of these services helping clients learn English language skills.In attempting to serve the needs of the refugee clients of IRC, English instruction emerges as an essential bridge to assimilation in the United State

DUTIES:

  • Prepare and teach lessons for a group of mid-level refugee ESL learners (usually 6-10 students, though attendance does vary) that access and exercise all skills, including grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and prepare the students for a variety of work situations.
  • Help develop curriculum (as needed) to focus on the needs of the learners in the class
  • Track student attendance and progress with short nightly write-ups for each student

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • TESOL / TEFL certified (we accept new graduates and those who are currently completing their certification)

COMMITTMENT:

  • Teach Mondays and Wednesdays at the IRC center from 6:00-7:30, with preparation done in your own time. (3 teaching hours plus prep/grading as needed)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reliable and flexible.
  • Willing to practice cross-cultural communication and learn about the ethnic backgrounds of clients.
  • Willing to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts.
  • Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
  • Patient and enthusiastic in teaching others.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively in English; additional fluency in a refugee language preferred.
