Descripción de la oportunidad de voluntariado

Background

The "Refugee Independence through Service Enhancement" (RISE) Program is funded by the Massachusetts Office for Refugees and Immigrants (MORI) to help refugees gain self-sufficiency through volunteer assistance, with a primary focus on refugee employment. RISE seeks to train local and highly-qualified volunteers to serve as key participants in this aspect of successful resettlement. In partnership and coordination with staff at local agencies the volunteers will provide practical support related to jobs, and may also help refugees establish links to community during their initial months in the US.

Volunteers can work on their own, or as part of an office, club, or religious group. Working closely with refugees is a life-changing experience, one that empowers people to step outside their comfort zones and make a major difference in the lives of others.

Overview

  • Provide support, particularly focused on employment, for recently arrived refugees as they transition to life in Massachusetts
  • Undergo a comprehensive interview and orientation process
  • Be personally matched with a refugee individual or family from Iraq, Bhutan, Somalia, etc
  • Make a genuine difference in the lives of others by serving as a mentor and friend
  • Learn about the refugee resettlement experience

Requirements

  • Enthusiasm, dedication, and cultural sensitivity
  • Flexibility, timeliness, and dependability
  • Sensitivity in communication with people who may have limited English language; ability and a willingness to respond to their needs in a realistic, non-judgmental way
  • Ability to take initiative and work in close coordination under the guidance of the resettlement agency
  • Familiarity with the job search process and knowledge of the city's public transportation
  • Reliable transportation to get to and from volunteer activities
  • Completed interview and orientation session

Minimum commitment: six months (preference for student is fall and spring semesters for one academic year)

RISE also has opportunities for volunteers to work as classroom instructors in ESL and job-readiness, and as in-home literacy tutors. Classes are held every day. Volunteers must be reliable, willing to take initiative, and have enthusiasm in helping students learn English.

To qualify all you need is an interest in teaching English, commitment, patience and sensitivity. The time commitment is two to four hours a week, with at least six months of service. Training is provided, as is ongoing support.
