Street Sense is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 2003 with a mission to offer economic opportunities to people experiencing homelessness in our community through a newspaper that elevates voices and encourages debate on poverty and injustice. We publish a 16-page newspaper 26 times a year and have a current circulation of 16,000. The paper is distributed by our vendors, persons currently or formerly homeless, who keep 100% of the profit from sale of the paper. Visit us on the web at www.streetsense.org.
Under the umbrella of our 10th anniversary activities, Street Sense is planning to host s series of public forums in 2013 aimed at stimulating dialogue between policy makers and the public on issues related to homelessness. We are currently recruiting volunteers to staff a planning and implementation committee. Duties will include but are not limited to reserving event space, selecting speakers and moderators, and promoting the forums. While no previous experience is necessary, we are especially seeking persons with previous experience in event planning and implementation, public education campaigns, marketing and promotion.
The committee will meet on a regular basis throughout the year, most likely in the evenings after normal business hours. Generally meetings will be held at the organization's headquarters, located 1/2 block from the Metro Center metro station. Committee members will need to work successfully as part of a team, have good communication skills, be highly task orientated and must be willing to complete assignments between meetings. The work of the committee will be carried out in a collegial, fun and social working environment.
Prospective volunteers should send an email outlining their interest and any relevant experience to Street Sense's Executive Director, Brian Carome at brian@streetsense.org.
