Reading Buddy
Position Summary:
The volunteer tutor creates an experience for young readers to enjoy reading. Tutor meets assigned students during school for an hour each session twice a week, or once a week at minimum. The tutor works one-on-one to support the student in their learning by reading and discussing books. The tutor acts as a positive role model and mentor.
Responsibilities:
- Attend required training sessions
- Develop a positive relationship with assigned student
- Model appropriate behaviors and a positive attitude toward school
- Be on-time and present at every tutoring session
- Assist the student by coaching, listening, encouraging and supporting them
- Inform the site coordinator if challenges or concerns arise
- Keep information about students confidential
- Provide feedback on your experience to the site coordinator
- Comply with school policies and procedures
- Call school before your session to check if your buddies are present and available
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of Volunteer Orientation and Reading Buddy Training
- Successful completion of background check
- Commitment to helping young people stay in school and prepare for life
- An appreciation for all people – acceptance of people representing diverse cultures and backgrounds
- Willingness to learn and apply effective tutoring methods
- Good communication skills
Time Commitment
- One hour twice a week (or once a week) until end of June 2013. Anytime between 9:00am-3:30pm (the school day) that works for the volunteer.
