At this type of homestay you will keep yourself busy by interacting with the young monks or nuns. For example, you can teach them English (or any appropriate subject in an informal setting), you can play with them, converse and joke with them, or learn from them.
Living in a monastery is very laid back. You will have much extra time to do whatever you wish, such as traveling the surrounding area, reading, writing, taking photos, and studying. Feel free to pray with your new new found knowledge of Buddhism.
Monks (or nuns) which study or live at the monasteries range from ages of 5-16 years old, and then there are elder teachers. Depending on the monastery, anywhere between 20 - 50 will be present.
Most important of all about this placement, is observing, seeing in person the daily life and rituals of a monk.
Where will I stay while volunteering?
You can either stay at the monastery itself or a nearby hotel. Each monastery has a different room for volunteers. If you wish to see the rooms to a specific monastery or examples of a typical volunteer's room, please go to the side bar on the right or click here for photos of the monastery we support.
What will I eat?
As with most placements, the meals are typical Nepali Dhal and Bhat. If you need a break from the pattern, there are restaurants to be found to provide a variety in your diet.
Where is this placement available?
