We would like to begin an arts and crafts center where our pupils can learn how to make cultural crafts and express themselves through art.
To start with, we will need to construct a small workshop. We will be using the local traditional method of thatched mud structure with a woven grass roof. Volunteers will be trained in the method, and will be helping to construct the workshop.
After the workshop is constructed, we will be teaching the children different art methods. We will of course specialize in the local crafts such as barkcloth making, weaving baskets, and making paper beads, but we would love to make our crafts international, so methods from other countries/cultures would be very welcome. The volunteers will trade their knowledge of their crafts in exchange for knowledge of ours.
The main goal of the workshop is to offer our pupils exposure to the arts, possibly giving them a future in craftsmanship, and the secondary goal is to create beautiful pieces of art for volunteers and vistors to purchase. The proceeds from the sales will go into the savings fund to help us save up for our various projects.
We ask that our volunteers contribute to our "Volunteer Breadbasket" with a small fee of $50USD. This is the ONLY fee we ask of our volunteers. Some exceptions apply.
The maximum amount of volunteers needed for this project is 5. We also have many other projects, so if you are more than 5, please consider one of the other opportunities.
We require our potential volunteers to fill out a volunteer profile, which can be obtained by emailing us with your name, and which project you would like to help with.
