Executive Director

The Boston New Music Initiative, Inc. seeks a qualified volunteer candidate for the position of Executive Director within the organization. This position will begin on or around March 15, 2013 and run through May 2014. The position typically runs annually from August through May and is renewable by mutual consent. Review of applicants shall begin on February 1, 2013. This position is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring arts administration professional to gain valuable and significant experience in a rapidly-growing non-profit music corporation.

Director positions are volunteer positions by default, but a stipend may be provided pending available budget and approval by the Board of Directors. As the organization does not maintain a physical office location, many responsibilities can be performed online and with a flexible schedule. College credit for internships may be available depending upon each school's internship requirements.

Description: Reporting to the President of the Organization, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the Organization's day-to-day operations while continuously promoting and protecting the Organization's mission. S/he is appointed by the Board of Directors to a one-year term, renewable by mutual consent. The Executive Director functions as the point-of-contact for the Organization, and should have significant experience in arts administration. S/he should also fully support and endorse the Organization's mission and current and long-term goals. Specific responsibilities include:

Public Face of the Organization

  • Function as the point-of-contact for the Organization
  • Attend all Organization concerts and events, speaking on behalf of the Organization when appropriate
  • Communicate with media, academic individuals or Organizations, external ensembles, and individual members of Organization when necessary in order to fulfill, promote, or further the Organization's mission

Personnel Management

  • Oversee and preside over recurring Director and Staff meetings
  • Coordinate with and oversee all members of the volunteer staff, creating new positions when necessary to assist with operations
  • Meet with department directors on a regular basis to track updates, deadlines, and activities on all department business
  • Create and oversee all Organization task forces established for specific projects and events

Administration

  • Report to and maintain regular contact with the President of the Organization
  • Seek to constantly improve and expand the Organization's brand through establishing and fostering relevant connections within the industry, networking, and securing funding through grant proposals, major donations, and fundraising campaigns
  • Attend quarterly Board of Directors meetings to provide a State of the Organization and to observe all proceedings and decision made

Qualifications: Strong interpersonal, internal, and external communication skills required. Ability to correspond quickly, effectively, and respectfully via phone, email, or in person is a necessity. Experience in working with budgets, concert planning, volunteer management, and arts administration preferred. Applicants should be organized and efficient, and able to work independently and proactively. Strong computer skills are required, including an ability to work with or quickly gain a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Apps. Candidates should also have a strong awareness of and support for the Organization's mission and current and long-term goals.

Salary: Volunteer position will become a stipended position beginning in August 2013; terms of the stipend will be dependent upon approval from Board of Directors and available budget. College credit may also be available depending upon each school's internship requirements.
