Make a connection that can last a lifetime: host a teen leader from Iraq this July!
The World Affairs Council is looking for Portland-area families with high school-age children to host Iraqi and US participants of the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program from July 22–August 3.
Eight Iraqi teenagers and four American teenagers will be in Oregon from July 22 – August 3, 2012, for a program focusing on Youth Activism. Homestay host families provide a bed, breakfast and dinner, transportation to and from the Council's downtown office during program days, and an American family experience. Visitors will visit youth groups, meet with civic leaders, attend workshops, and craft a media project on their experience.
The Iraqi teens are recruited from all areas of Iraq and are selected based on academic performance, community involvement, and English language proficiency. The US participants are recruited from Portland's partner communities of Louisville, Kentucky, and Brattleboro, Vermont. Host siblings will be able to participate in some program activities and all cultural and recreational activities. This is a great opportunity to learn both about teen life in Iraq and how young people can make a difference right here in Portland.
In addition to the 11 student participants, an Iraqi educator will also be traveling with the program. We are looking for a homestay host for her as well.
