Texas Campaign for the Environment a local nonprofit that holds our government and large corporations accountable for environmental responsibility. A few examples of some of the changes we've created are:
- Rick Perry signed our Producer Take-back bill into law, which requires television manufacturers to recycle their old products
- We were the driving force that established Dell's computer recycling program - We established curbside recycling programs in parts of Texas
- We just passed a bag ban in Austin, to take effect in March of 2013. The ordinance bans retailers from giving away single-use paper and plastic bags
And now? We're taking on Walmart. They sell over $50 billion in electronics every year, so we're holding them accountable to retailer responsibility. We're pressuring them to establish drop-off points at all their stores for free electronics recycling, so that we can keep televisions, computers, and more out of our landfills and waterways.
We've been an active group since 1991. We're the largest and most successful environmental nonprofit in the entire state, and create change at the local, state, and national levels. The way we win these campaigns is through organizing communities to make a difference. In fact, we're in the midst of spreading our organizing efforts to every corner of Texas as we work to build solid political presence in all 181 State Legislative districts. We're 45,000 members strong in Texas, and rapidly growing.
