Asociación ANAI works in the Talamanca region of Costa Rica, whose local population of indigenous, black and campesino communities live together with a unique mix of tropical ecosystems, including Central America's largest remaining intact rainforest, endangered sea turtles and coral reefs, wild rivers and a diversity of wetlands. ANAI works hand in hand with the local communities to become more economically self-reliant through environmentally friendly activities, enabling a way of life that balances long-term economic and environmental interests. In 2002, ANAI's Talamanca Initiative received the prestigious U.N. Equator Prize at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, recognizing "extraordinary accomplishment in reducing poverty in the tropics through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity."
