ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
Mission & vision
Global Citizen Year (www.globalcitizenyear.org) is a Bay Area-based non-profit organization, which isunleashing the potential of America's emerging leaders by creating a new educational pathway that prepares them to succeed in college, careers, and a global economy.
Each year we recruit and train a diverse corps of high-potential high school graduates and immerse them in Africa, Latin America, and Asia during a Bridge Year before college. Through world-class training, homestays and individual apprenticeships, our Fellows develop the self-awareness, cross-cultural fluencies and grit needed to be transformative leaders throughout their lives.
Beyond our core program, we aim to create a paradigm shift: ultimately, we envision a world in which a global Bridge Year after high school is the norm, not the exception, in how young Americans are prepared for 21st century leadership.
Our organization combines the best of private and public sector management to create a high-impact, growth-oriented social enterprise. Since our founding in 2009 by Harvard Business School graduate Abigail Falik, we have built a global team, board of directors and advisory council, and we have secured investments from leading individual and institutional funders including the Hewlett Foundation, the Nike Foundation, the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, and Harvard Business School. We have also been featured in national forums including the Clinton Global Initiative, the Aspen Ideas Festival, Pop!Tech the New York Times and NPR.
