MOMAS is an inmate-designed instructional program at San Quentin State Prison, whose purpose is to provide re-entry instruction to paroling prisoners. We do this in 3 10-14 week modules in the following subjects:
Module 1 - General Job Readiness
This module focuses on the job search and job retention process. We instruct our students on how to best search for employment, how to write a good resume, cover letter and other correspondence (thank you notes, etc.), how to prepare for a job interview, job retention skills such as conflict resolution and leadership, and other similar topics.
Module 2 - Basic Financial Literacy
This module covers essentials of financial literacy such as budgeting, checking and savings accounts, taxes, and other similar subject.
Module 3 - Investments and Business Development/Entrepreneurship
This module goes into more sophisticated financial and business topics such as investing in stocks, purchasing a home, starting your own business and other related topics.
MOMAS is run by an executive committee comprised of currently incarcerated men and assisted by outside volunteers. Volunteers are absolutely essential to the success of the program as they instruct the classes, bring in outside speakers and presenters, facilitate information gathering and sharing and assist in numerous other ways.
