College Access Now is dedicated to making college graduation possible for talented, motivated and economically disadvantaged students, who are among the first generation in their families to go to college. We have a two-year curriculum that supports high school students who enroll in CAN's program as juniors in high school. CAN was established in 2005 and now serves nearly 500 students at six high schools throughout Seattle. Virtually all of our students gain entrance to two and four-year colleges around the U.S. We have also established a "college persistence" program that builds on our strong personal relationships with students to ensure they have support to navigate difficulties in their college experience that might otherwise discourage continuance. Our staffing model relies on two full-time program managers based in the schools, a full-time development director and AmeriCorps and Vista members to coach student groups in the high schools. Our collegial and active board has been a source of support to staff over the years.
Program participants are provided with four critical services:
The program is founded on the belief that, given appropriate resources and support, these students will be successful in graduating and going to college. A recent program evaluation identified strong support for the program from school counselors and students.
We also have good relations with the Seattle Public School district. Further information about CAN may be obtained at www.collegeaccessnow.org.
