Theatre of the Oppressed NYC (TONYC) partners with communities facing discrimination to inspire transformative action through theatre.
TONYC works with local communities including the homeless, undocumented immigrants, prisoners, transgender homeless youth, refugees, people living with HIV/AIDS, differently-abled youth and adults, public-school students and teachers to establish "popular theatre troupes" throughout the five boroughs. Community actors, directos, playwrights, designers and producers create original, interactive plays inspired by real-life struggles for human rights. The popular troupes tourthroughout varied communities to engage in theatrical brainstorming or "forum theatre." These interactive forums demand solidarity amongst diverse New Yorkers and creatively challenge systems of oppression. Every human being is an actor in his or her own life: by imagining and rehearsing solutions together onstage, we prepare ourselves to take action offstage.
