NYWC provides free, long-term creative writing workshops throughout New York City for people from groups that have been historically deprived of voice in our society. Writing with others in an atmosphere of respect and acceptance, participants discover the value of their own stories, gain confidence and a stronger sense of self and become less isolated from themselves and from society. By organizing a community of writers and leaders from diverse backgrounds, we galvanize the voices of the marginalized and create opportunities for all writers to organize and to connect with the larger community. NYWC's goal is to create an inclusive city, one that is aware of the diversity of voices within it and honors the lives of all of its citizens.
The Narrator is the blog of NY Writers Coalition (NYWC), an organization which provides free creative writing workshops throughout New York City for people from groups that have been historically deprived of voice in our society. The Narrator focuses on topics important to the NYWC community of writers and activists, such as race and gender equality, education and prison reform, LGBT issues, homelessness, rights of the disabled, veterans' issues and immigrants' rights.
Each week, The Narrator features art and literary reviews, a profile of a social activist, inspirational ideas for writers, and original creative writing prompts to use on your own or while writing in groups. Like NYWC, The Narrator encourages voice and equality for all. Contributors to The Narrator are workshop leaders and other members of the NYWC community, as well as invited guest bloggers.
