Zoox is an abbreviated form of the word zooxanthellae, which is an algae. This is commonly found within tropical corals and makes up one half of the symbiotic relationship by providing the corals with energy to grow in the form of glucose, glycerol and amino acids. The zooxanthellae in return are provided with a home or base in which to flourish. They also provide the colour for the coral which is lost when they are stressed and they leave the coral leading to coral bleaching.
