Descripción

LIFT-DC's mission is to help community members achieve economic stability and well-being in the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia). Nationally, LIFT is working to establish a new standard for holistic and enduring solutions in our country's fight against poverty.(For opportunities with LIFT's National headquarters also located in Washington, DC please visit their idealist page here).

LIFT is working to help lift people out of poverty for good. We pair rigorously trained advocates with committed community members to build the strong personal, social and financial foundations they need to get ahead. By setting their own goals and working hard to achieve them, LIFT Members are equipped to get a job, a safe home and a quality education for themselves and their kids. They also build a support network, confidence in what they bring to the table and the skills to manage tough times in the future.

LIFT operates resource centers in six cities across the nation where members of the community can come get help. Nearly 100,000 Members in six major cities have already committed to do the hard work needed to achieve their goals

History in the District of Columbia

The first LIFT resource center in Washington, DC was founded in the fall of 1999 by two Georgetown University students, Elena Boyd ('02) and Sarita Daftary ('03). Originally operating out of common rooms on Georgetown University's campus, LIFT-DC (formerly NSP-DC) officially moved into the Perry School Community Services Center in the summer of 2000. The Perry School was originally the first high school for African-American students in the District of Columbia and now serves as a hub of community support in northwest Washington DC. In 2011, LIFT-DC expanded services to the THEARC (Town Hall Education Recreation Arts Campus). THEARC is a $27 million, 110,000 square foot , state-of-the-art campus located in Washington, DC's Ward 8. With a mission of working to improve the quality of life for residents of Ward 8, THEARC is home to eleven of Washington, DC's best nonprofit agencies whom all share the goal of helping children and adults reach their full potential.
