Founded in 1977, the DC Bar Foundation is the leading private funder of civil legal aid in the District of Columbia. It is committed to the vision that residents of the District have equal access to justice, regardless of income. DCBF's mission is to fund, support, and improve legal representation of the poor, vulnerable, and otherwise disadvantaged in the District of Columbia.
DCBF funds the network by providing grants to civil legal aid organizations in DC – small and large, new and old. Last year grants ranged from $8,000 to $76,000, and the average grant was $30,000. Our grantmaking process is rigorous, yet efficient, in order to ensure that your gift makes the greatest impact.
DCBF supports the network with training and technical assistance. Last year, for example, we partnered with the National Institute for Trial Advocacy to provide free training to attorneys at 12 different legal services providers in the city.
DCBF improves the network of legal aid organizations by providing tax-free, interest-free, forgivable loans to qualifying DC poverty lawyers to help them meet their staggering educational debt obligations while earning a modest public interest salary. This Loan Repayment Assistance Program helps organizations attract and retain top-notch talent to serve DC's neediest residents.
