The Napokie Foundation was established in Arusha, Tanzania in 2011 by three Maasai activists and an activist from the United States in a collaborative effort to address the education crisis in Maasai villages in Tanzania. The mission of the Napokie Foundation is to provide culturally-relevant education in Maasai communities in Northern Tanzania through establishing community-directed schools, researching and working with the spiritual leaders to incorporate indigenous knowledge into the curricula, and developing school materials that express Maasai culture, language, and tradition on the nursery, primary, and secondary school level. There are currently two ongoing initiatives under the Napokie Foundation in the Maasai districits of Simanjiro and Monduli.
The Napokie Initiatives are directed by the local community leaders of each village and are centered on creating fluidity between traditional and formal education. Each initiative is chosen based on the already apparent dedication of local leaders and their ongoing community initiatives that need assistance in development. The Napokie Initiatives depend on the direct involvement of the communities in the management of the schools and curriculum development.
