Also known as The Roberts Enterprise Development Fund, REDF is a California-based venture philanthropy organization that invests in nonprofit-run businesses called 'social enterprises.' Many of the people we have interviewed after getting a social enterprise job are still earning a paycheck two years later. They are able to contribute to their families, to their communities and to the economy.
Now we're bringing our model to scale and working across our state's innovative business environment. We will create jobs for thousands of Californians who have been shut out of the workforce and will develop a replicable social enterprise model to bring young people and adults into the economic mainstream throughout the country. The only California-based organization to receive funding from the federal Social Innovation Fund, REDF impacts individual lives and fuels the engine of change for people seeking to find the opportunity the state has always promised.
Since 1997, REDF has provided funding and business assistance to a carefully selected portfolio of social enterprises that employ young people disconnected from school and work, and adults who are overcoming barriers to employment. Organizations in our portfolio are able to expand their enterprises, achieve sustainable success and measure the positive impact of their work on people and communities. REDF has helped employ more than 5,700 people accross California and is supported by the generous contributions of individuals, corporations, and foundations.
