The Guttmacher Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organization that advances sexual and reproductive health and rights in the United States and worldwide. Established in 1968, the Institute carries out an interrelated program of social science research, policy analysis and public education designed to generate new ideas, encourage enlightened public debate and promote sound policy and program development. The Institute's overarching goal is to ensure the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health for all people worldwide.

As a leading national and international authority on reproductive health and rights, Guttmacher deploys scientific evidence and policy analysis to help build support for sound public health policies and programs. It is a trusted source of information for government decision-makers, legislators, thought leaders, activists, health care professionals and the media. In its domestic work, it reaches change agents at the national, state and local levels; in the international arena, it provides information at both global and country-specific levels.

The Institute, which has an annual budget of approximately $18 million and a staff of 80, receives financial support from a large number of foundations, U.S. and Western European government agencies, international organizations and several thousand individual contributors. It is governed by a 36-member board comprising eminent professionals and civic leaders from across the United States and around the world.
