Pratham, which means “first” in Sanskrit, is one of the largest
NGOs in India in education. Pratham addresses a unique problem facing India: In
the world’s 10th largest economy, one-half of the country's 210
million children cannot read adequately.
Without quality education, these children are vulnerable to child labor,
child marriage, violence, poverty, overpopulation, exploitation, and unemployment.
This is perhaps the greatest challenge facing India today.
By increasing the literacy levels and employability of
India’s underprivileged, Pratham is committed to improving India’s economic and
social equality. Pratham does this
through the introduction of low-cost education models that are sustainable and
reproducible, and by operating an industry-specific vocational skills training program.
In 21 years Pratham has helped provide quality education to over 40 million
children. We will not rest till our mission, “Every Child in School and Learning Well” becomes a reality.
Pratham USA is a 501
(C) (3) non-profit organization with a four star rating (the highest possible)
from Charity Navigator. Pratham USA
raises approximately $15 million annually, primarily from individuals but also
foundations and corporations.
