Descripción

The Phillips Collection is home to a world-class collection of 19th- and 20th-century European and American art. Created by visionary collector Duncan Phillips who first opened a gallery in his home to the public in 1921, the museum's intimate environment encourages people to make personal connections with art. Its permanent collection comprises more than 2,500 works by impressionist and 20th-century artists, including Europeans such as Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Paul Cézanne, Honoré Daumier, Edgar Degas, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, and Pablo Picasso. American masters include Milton Avery, Richard Diebenkorn, Arthur Dove, Thomas Eakins, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O'Keeffe, Mark Rothko, Albert Pinkham Ryder, and John Sloan.

The museum organizes exhibitions and produces highly regarded programs for adults and K-12 teachers and students. Its Sunday Concerts, held in the historic wood-paneled Music Room, have been a favorite with Washingtonians since 1941 and have provided important early concerts for extraordinary musical talents such as Jessye Norman, Emanuel Ax, and the late Glenn Gould-all of whom had their U.S. debuts at the Phillips.

In April 2006, The Phillips opened our new building with galleries, visitor amenities, and educaton facilities that allows the museum to do more of what it does best---offer members and visitors an extraordinary opportunity to experience great art, up-close and personal.
