Neighborhood Bike Works is a nonprofit educational organization in Philadelphia that seeks to increase opportunities for urban youth in underserved neighborhoods in greater Philadelphia by offering educational, recreational, and career-building opportunities through bicycling; it also promotes cycling as a healthy, affordable, environment-friendly form of transportation.
Neighborhood Bike Works operates two community bike shops in Philadelphia and serves hundreds of youth each year in our free and low-cost out of school time programs. Our goal is to instill confidence, inspire a sense of adventure, and build skills for future success.
Youth Bike Education & Empowerment Program
We offer after-school, weekend, and summer programs where youth learn about bike mechanics and safe urban riding, explore the city, and gain tangible skills. The Youth Bike Education & Empowerment Program (YBEEP) is a holistic pathway where youth can join our programs through our entry level programs, practice the skills they have learned, and eventually pass on those skills to others. Many of our students stay involved for months and even years, and become mentors and teachers to younger kids. They gain life skills and tangible experience they can use as they transition out of high school.
Adult Programs & Retail Shop
We open our bike shops to adults who want to learn more about mechanics and discover the benefits of urban cycling. Programs include an Adult Bike Repair Class and Adult Repair Cooperative, where community members can utilize our shop space and tools to repair and build their own bikes. Through these programs and our retail shop in North Philadelphia, we re-sell donated bikes and bike parts to raise funds for our youth programs.
