The Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena (FDIA) was formed in the summer of 1996 in response to the pending closure of the ice arena by its owner, the National Park Service. Parents and friends organized and took over the management of the arena, revitalizing the facility located in Southeast DC (Ward 7). FDIA created the Kids On Ice® (KOI) program, which has grown to provide free basic skills, figure skating, hockey and speed skating lessons to disadvantaged children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn these sports. FDIA also provides free skating lessons to DC Public Schools through its School Skate for Fitness program. FDIA is the only public indoor ice arena located in Washington, DC, and the only skating facility in the area that provides free skating programs to children. The mission of FDIA is to provide increased opportunity, education and inspiration to the young people of Washington, DC, and the surrounding area through ice skating and educational activities. We currently serve over 7,000 children per year through the Kids On Ice program. This program, together with the use of the facility by schools, leagues and other organizations, makes Fort Dupont Ice Arena more than just an ice rink – it is a community center.
