UCP Wheels for Humanity's mission is to provide increased self-sufficiency, mobility, and education to people with disabilities throughout the world, without regard to political affiliation, religious belief or ethnic identity. To meet this mission, UCP Wheels for Humanity collects and refurbishes discarded wheelchairs and delivers and individually fits them to disadvantaged children and adults in developing countries. Since 1996, UCP Wheels has helped thousands of children and adults with disabilities across the developing world gain increased mobility and dignity. It is estimated that more than 100 million children and adults worldwide need wheelchairs and do not have them either due to lack of access, lack of money, or both. Their lack of mobility stems from accidents, birth defects, war injuries, debilitating diseases, aging, natural disasters and land mines. UCP Wheels is one of the few organizations of its kind that uses the expertise of volunteer Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Certified Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers (CRTS) to individually fit clients to wheelchairs.
