Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and succeed in life.
Communities In Schools of Seattle partners with Seattle Public Schools and primarily serves schools in economically disadvantaged areas with a disproportionately high number of ethnic minorities. Over the years CIS-S has helped hundreds of youth overcome the social, emotional and physical barriers to learning by providing academic support and intervention with students for truancy, inter-student harassment, emotional and family issues, housing and health concerns.
The fundamental beliefs of every CIS program are that every child needs and deserves:
CIS-S programs include:
Stuff the Bus In a district of over 46,000 students, more than 40% come from impoverished backgrounds. CIS-S is coordinating a community-wide school supply drive to fill this need.
Educational Reform What do students need to be successful? More time in school! CIS-S and Seattle Public Schools are piloting a new program to help struggling 6th grade students be successful.
Family Support and One-on-One Intervention It is far too often the case that students who struggle in school also face struggles at home. Unfortunately schools are not equipped to provide family interventions. CIS-S is able to fill this gap.
Skill-Building Activities Kids need tangible skills to be successful. Ensuring that students gain marketable skills is one of the CIS Five Basics.
