Sobre nosotros

Disability Rights Advocates (DRA) is a non-profit organization which strives to protect the civil and human rights of people with disabilities throughout the United States and internationally. DRA is run by people with disabilities for people with disabilities. DRA works to end discrimination in areas such as access to public accommodations, employment, transportation, education, and housing. DRA's mission is to ensure that people with disabilities are no longer treated as second class citizens.

TAKING ON THE GIANTS
DRA has successfully challenged unfair practices by many of the largest and most powerful companies and institutions in the nation. DRA has brought class action lawsuits and other high impact litigation to end discrimination by major retailers, hotel, restaurant and gas station chains, universities, cities and counties, and other powerful entities. The results have improved access and integration for millions of people with disabilities.

CREATING LOCAL AND WORLD-WIDE IMPACT
There are over 750 million people with disabilities in the world. Their resources are often meager and legal help outside of the U.S. is generally non-existent. DRA's mission is unique in that it combines legal advocacy in the U.S. with disability rights on the international front. DRA established and supports an affiliated organization in Budapest, Hungary, which is working to assist people with disabilities and to establish an independent living center as a model for all of Central Europe.

PROVIDING EFFECTIVE REPRESENTATION
DRA is committed to vigorous advocacy on all fronts. DRA has worked on behalf of people with every kind of disability and is committed to assisting those who have had the least access to legal resources, such as persons with mental disabilities, children with disabilities, and nursing home residents.

USING LAW AS AN INSTRUMENT FOR SOCIAL CHANGE
DRA's efforts have resulted in the establishment of a trust fund administered by the San Francisco Foundation. This DRA Fund supports projects challenging discrimination against persons with disabilities in key areas such as housing and transportation. DRA thus utilizes the law to not only directly remedy civil rights violations, but also to support other non-profit disability organizations in areas of fundamental importance to independent living.

BUILDING A JUST SOCIETY
Legislation has not magically eliminated the discrimination and poverty which millions of people with disabilities still face. DRA strives to ensure that people with disabilities throughout the U.S. and the world are treated with equality and dignity.
