The School of Professional & Extended Studies is the seventh and newest major academic unit of American University. By establishing the School of Professional & Extended Studies in 2012, American University created a vibrant center of experiential learning that provides courses and programs that are both rigorous and practical to meet the needs of discerning learners.
Programs offered include:
Graduate Gateway Program– The Graduate Gateway Program is a one-semester program that introduces students to graduate level course work and internships in Washington DC in their respective field.
Washington Internship for Native Students- offers American Indian/ Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian students the opportunity to build leadership skills while living, studying, and interning in Washington D.C.
Graduate Certificate in Project Management and Evaluation - Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of projects is fast becoming a critical management function in the nonprofit and philanthropic sector as donor organizations seek more accountability in the funds they donate. Our program will equip you with the skills necessary to design and implement program-based M&E, enabling you to advance within your current nonprofit organization with skills that are in demand.
Test Prep Courses– Preparatory course to take the GRE, GMAT, and LSAT exams. Sessions are offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
English Language Program- The English Language Program (ELP) at American University offers customized, short term programs for groups or evening courses for individuals for non-native English speakers.
LEAD Program– American University's Leadership, Empowerment And Development (LEAD) program provides women clarity and skills to guide them through significant transitions in their personal and professional lives. The holistic, multi-disciplinary curriculum in the four-course LEAD program addresses gender-based needs and experiences in both professional and personal development from one's thirties through midlife, retirement and beyond. LEAD courses are now available in Annapolis as well.
