YOUNG AFRICA WOMEN INITIATIVE (YAWI) provides female survivors of
conflict, civil strife, and gender-based violence with the tools and
resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and
self-sufficiency. As a result, YAWI promotes sustainable civil societies
while helping to empower one African woman at a time.
YAWI’s vision is for African women to live in a world that embraces
integrity, peace, prosperity, respect for human rights and freedom from
The goals of YAWI as a philanthropic institution are:
- To invest in the efforts of African women who are engaged in innovative activities to develop their communities.
- To increase the amount of resources available to women and women’s projects in Africa.
- To advocate with other donors and policy makers for resources to empower African women.
- To establish alliances and build strategic relationships with other
national/international organizations and individuals who are committed
to promoting and protecting women’s rights.
What we do:
YAWI works with socially excluded women in five African countries
where conflict has devastated lives and communities. Each woman YAWI
serves has her own story– loss of loved ones, physical and emotional
trauma, loss of home, and displacement as refugees or internally
displaced persons in their own country. Regardless of their individual
circumstance, most women have endured a struggle for survival.
YAWI believes that lasting change can only be achieved when women have access to both knowledge and resources.
