Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School is an innovative, award winning Expeditionary Learning School and the District of Columbia's first school dedicated to education for sustainability and biliteracy. Purposefully diverse and culturally inclusive, Mundo Verde was founded to empower students to reach their full potential and give them the skills they need to work together to solve sustainability challenges. Mundo Verde's mission is to foster high levels of academic achievement among a diverse group of students by preparing them to be successful and compassionate stewards of their communities. Mundo Verde creates a nurturing environment that supports social and emotional development, academic excellence, and the inclusion and achievement of all children.
The school was recently named a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School and was awarded the 2013 District of Columbia Mayor's Sustainability Award for demonstrating outstanding achievement and commitment to sustainable practices. Mundo Verde is also an Ashoka Changemaker School and a Flamboyan Foundation Family Engagement Partner School.
Mundo Verde currently offers preschool through 3rd grade; the school will add one additional grade each year through fifth grade and is partnering with four other language immersion charter schools to launch DC International, an international baccalaureate middle and highschool, this fall.
Faculty and staff benefit from a collaborative professional learning community that aligns professional development with curriculum development, refinement and implementation; and with development, implementation and analysis of assessments.
