The mission of The World Science Festival is to cultivate and sustain a general public informed by the content of science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future. Through world-class programming, featuring inspired collaborations and outstanding talent, the World Science Festival aims to transform public perceptions of science. The World Science Festival's signature event is an annual week-long celebration and exploration of science that launched in 2008. Hailed a "new cultural institution," by the New York Times, the Festival has featured such luminaries as: Stephen Hawking, E.O. Wilson, Sir Paul Nurse, Harold Varmus, Daniel Dennett, Richard Leakey, Sylvia Earle, Yo-Yo Ma, Oliver Sachs, Chuck Close, Phillip Glass, Charlie Kaufman, Glenn Close, Anna Deavere Smith, Bobby McFerrin, John Lithgow, Bill T. Jones, Charlie Rose, John Hockenberry, Elizabeth Vargas and Walter Isaacson, among many others. In its first five years, the World Science Festival has attracted over 700,000 visitors to its live programming and millions of viewers online. The 2013 Festival will take place May 29 - June 2.
