WePAC's mission is to promote childhood literacy by engaging volunteers in Philadelphia public schools through re-opening and staffing libraries, academic mentoring, and after-school enrichment.
In our vision, every Philadelphia student will be empowered with the literacy skills vital to the success of the child and the prosperity of our community.
WePAC serves vibrant, historically-important, multi-racial communities in West Philadelphia, home to major universities and cultural institutions. Many neighborhoods served by WePAC suffer from high poverty rates: More than 20% of families live below the poverty line, more than 30% of female-headed households live below the poverty line, and 35% of children below the age of 18 live in poverty. Median family income is below $20,000 per year. Approximately 90% of children qualify for free lunch.
WePAC renovates school library spaces, collects and donates books, and staffs and runs school libraries with volunteer teams. Our volunteers help students select and check out books, conduct literacy-related activities, guide research, and read to students. WePAC encourages curiosity and seeks to foster a life-long love of reading.
During the 2012-2013 school year, WePAC volunteer teams staffed 12 school libraries on a weekly basis. WePAC catalogued and donated more than 40,000 books, and circulated 2,500 books per month to students.
