Internship Description:

HIAS is seeking a BA or MA candidate for part-time research internships. The intern will work with HIAS' Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services Departments on projects affecting refugees, asylees, and special immigrant visa (SIV) holders and on our agency's related programming, including that for LGBTI newcomers. The intern will work under the close supervision of our staff to develop refugee resettlement program materials and reports in support of HIAS initiatives, and collect and disseminate information in support of LGBTI refugee programs at HIAS' local affiliates in New York and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, draft, and/or translate web materials, cultural orientation materials, PowerPoints, and local resource guides for refugees, asylees, and SIVs
  • Conduct research and writing in support of resettlement programs
  • Assist staff in collaborating with refugees, local agencies and national organizations on a variety of issues
  • Examine and monitor country conditions affecting at-risk LGBTIs
  • Other research and projects on program development, management, and operations as needed

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Strong skills in new media and social networking (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Strong research, analytical, writing, and creative skills
  • Critical thinking and cross-cultural communication skills
  • A focus in the humanities field and interest in research, editing, journalism, immigration, human rights, LGBTI issues, or related work
  • Fluency in English; Fluency in Farsi, Arabic or French a plus
  • Experience with immigrants, asylees, and/or refugees preferred
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, ability to work independently, and strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word & Excel) and internet research
