Make the Road New Yorkbuilds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership of more than 12,000 low-income New Yorkers, Make the Road tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants' rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.
MRNY's Department of Legal & Support Services works to strengthen our organizing work by (1) helping to envision and implement leverage strategies (including strategic litigation) that help win our organizing campaigns; (2) providing technical legal support for policy work; and (3) providing legal and support services to draw in new members and help meet the immediate needs of MRNY's active members.
MRNY's Department of Legal & Support Services currently employs 20 attorneys and advocates/paralegalswho specialize in labor and employment, housing, public benefits, disability benefits, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, and civil rights. MRNY is seeking law students interested in a summer internship during the summer of 2014. Interns would work at MRNY offices in Jackson Heights, Queens; Bushwick, Brooklyn; Brentwood, Long Island; or Port Richmond, Staten Island. While interns would be placed in the employment, housing/benefits, or immigration teams, students may be called upon to work on a variety of legal issues facing MRNY members.
Applicants, either 1Ls or 2Ls, must be committed to social justice. Spanish language proficiency is required, fluency is preferred.
