About the WELLTR Project

WELLTR is an innovate teacher preparation program designed to increase the number of licensed English as a Second Language teachers in the Worcester Public Schools in order to better serve English Language Learners (ELL) in both general education and Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) classrooms. WELLTR Resident Teachers take Masters-level courses on site in the district, work closely with a teacher mentor in the classroom, and engage in a cohort professional learning community to share effective practices and problem solve challenges. WELLTR is a partnership of the Worcester Public Schools, Center for Collaborative Education, and Cambridge College. WELLTR aims to be a pipeline of high quality teachers of ELL students in the Worcester Public Schools, working to transform schools for equitable and high achievement of ELL students.

WELLTR Interns

WELLTR interns will work under the direction of the WELLTR Project Director and WELLTR Project Management Team. Interns and will have the opportunity to help shape programming for this recently launched initiative in a time of innovative change in policy in serving ELLs equitably in Massachusetts.

Communications and Outreach: Update and create new WELLTR outreach and communications materials to support WELLTR public relations and programming, with duties as follows:

  • Ø Work with the director and team to develop and implement outreach strategies to promote WELLTR
  • Ø Assist with creating and maintaining the WELLTR website as well as developing WELLTR's online presence
  • Ø Write short articles about WELLTR work and events in cohort schools for the WELLTR website, local newspapers and/or other publications

Program Development: Assist the WELLTR team in the planning and execution of WELLTR's current cohort and upcoming cohort, with duties as follows:

  • Ø Support the WELLTR team in the planning, execution, and documentation of outcomes for WELLTR's upcoming work; this includes opportunities to attend graduate seminars, mentor professional development sessions and visit school sites to work with resident teachers and mentors
  • Ø Assist in the refinement of WELLTR program materials including organizing, proofreading and formatting the program handbook and supporting tools
  • Ø Work with the director to document the success of the program including outcomes of residents' action research projects

Additional areas of potential work for WELLTR Interns:

  • Ø Research topics of interest in ELL teacher preparation and policy to inform WELLTR programming and impact
  • Ø Analyze data from graduate seminars, mentor professional development sessions and other sources
  • Ø Organize and maintain the WELLTR archive of materials
  • Ø Complete additional assignments, as needed

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the position of WELLTR Intern should have the following qualifications:

  • Graduate or top undergraduate student in education, marketing/communications, public policy, or relevant field
  • Ø Knowledge about and interest in English Language Learners
  • Ø Commitment to equity in public education
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Strong communication and analytical skills
  • Self-starter who takes initiative
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task and complete projects by deadline
  • Knowledge of design software and web technologies such as Google products as well as experience with Excel, Publisher, formatting in Word, audio/video technologies, etc.
  • Ø K-12 teaching experience is a plus for program work
  • Knowledge of marketing and communication tools and strategies is a plus for outreach work

Dates and Hours

  • School Year: Fall and/or Spring semesters, approximately 8-12 hrs/week (negotiable)
  • Summer: May or June through August, approximately 24-32 hours per week (negotiable)


Compensation
: Interns receive a $500 stipend ($250/semester during the school year). Depending on school requirements, it may also be possible to earn course credit.
