Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) seeks a Climate Communications intern for spring 2013. This is a unique opportunity for an ace communicator to get professional-level experience tackling one of the major crises of our time: climate change.

PSR, a non-profit advocacy organization, works to protect human life from the gravest threats to health and survival -- nuclear weapons, nuclear energy and climate change. PSR asserts its strong medical voice through education and advocacy, conducted by our national office and our grassroots network of affiliate chapters, medical student chapters, and individual members. PSR is the co-recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize with International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.

Position Description

Be part of a dynamic, energetic team that raises the voice of health professionals to educate about climate change and build support for healthy renewable energy. The intern will work learn from climate, health and communications experts and will work closely with the Director of Environment and Health to help write, produce and disseminate educational resources, training materials, and web content. Typical responsibilities:

  • Monitor news and reports on climate change and health. Select key information for utilization by the program.
  • Assist the Director in writing and editing fact sheets, web articles, action alerts, blogs and training materials.
  • Help coordinate training webinars for health professionals on health dangers from climate change and climate messaging.
  • Network with PSR chapters around the country and publicize their climate-related activities on the PSR website.
  • Promote PSR's climate work using social media.

Knowledge and Skills Required

The ideal candidate will bring the following to the position:

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience writing in a variety of styles (academic, persuasive, casual).
  • Ability to synthesize complex material effectively and accurately.
  • Coursework or demonstrable experience in environment, climate change, and/or public health.
  • Competence with websites, Internet, social media.
  • Great work ethic: results-oriented, highly productive, team player.

Terms: Commitment of 16 hours/week or more. We work with students to provide support for academic credit. Our small, friendly office is located near the Farragut North metro station.
