DESCRIPTION: The International Institute of Connecticut, Inc. is a non-profit, non-sectarian social service agency dedicated to the needs of immigrants, refugees and their families. Support is provided through direct professional services, counseling, advocacy and the advancement of fair and humane public policy. The Resettlement Department provides direct social services to refugees, asylees, Cuban/Haitian Entrants and other eligible populations. Aiming to help our clients becomes self sufficient, caseworkers assist clients to find employment, becoming acculturated, and to feel comfortable navigating in their new community.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develop a case management plan, which outlines a plan of services and activities that will lead to client self-sufficiency while meeting the contractual needs of the federal refugee programs.
- Provide intensive case management support, client accompaniment, advocacy, and communication with community service providers on behalf of refugee clients.
- Provide core services to newly arrived families – including housing, ESL/school registration, cultural orientations, assistance with State social services (food stamps/medical), assistance with medical appointments and employment assistance.
- Complete case related paperwork, reports and professional documentation of services for federal auditing purposes.
- Provide transportation for initial client services.
- Provide ongoing direct case management and comply with detailed documentation requirements.
- Become familiar with multiple state, local and federal programs, including State of Connecticut DSS, Reception & Placement, Matching Grant.
- Coordinate outreach to identified communities and providers, informing them about the issue refugees & asylees and the services available through IIC.
LEVEL OF SUPERVISION:
Works under general supervision of the Director of Refugee Client Services and Coordinator of Community Resources & Volunteer Services, in collaboration with the other program staff, volunteers & interns. Weekly supervision will be facilitated by staff MSW.
QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS required / MSW or MS candidate preferred.
- Experience in case management or social work with similar populations
- Bi-Lingual oral and written skills a plus but not required - in French, Arabic, Swahili, Nepalese or Tigrinya
- Cultural competency
- Effective writing skills, organization and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
- Ability to collaborate with other service providers
- Computer skills and ability to fill out paperwork efficiently
- Valid driver's license and own vehicle required.
- Knowledge of refugee policies and programs (RP, MG, ORR, DSS) helpful.
