The DC Public Schools' Urban Education Leaders Internship Program (UELIP) is an opportunity to experience the unique and exciting work of managing an urban school district. This opportunity is open to both undergraduate and graduate students, or students who have recently graduated in the past year.

UELIP associates have the opportunity to participate in mission-critical projects for DCPS, and be on the front lines to see the positive changes to close the achievement gap being implemented in urban education.

The UELIP program accepts applicants for fall, spring, and summer cohorts.

  • Spring 2013 Program Dates: February 4, 2013 - May 3, 2013
    • Applications close: January 4, 2013
  • Summer 2013 Program Dates: June 10, 2013 - August 16, 2013
    • Applications close: March 29, 2013

During the fall and spring cohorts, associates are expected to contribute a minimum of 15 hours/week. The summer cohort requires a minimum of 40 hours/week.

Application process

The UELIP Application is available here for both Spring and Summer 2013 cohorts: http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/uelip

  1. Applicants are required to submit a cover letter and resume, as well as a 3-5 page writing sample
  2. All applicants must answer the following essay question (300-500 words)

    Over the past five years, DCPS has been at the forefront of education reform. What do you see as the most promising reform at DCPS and why? In addition, what do you believe DCPS could do better to close the achievement gap?

  3. Applicants for the economic hardship stipend must submit additional information (see below)

Selected candidates will be asked to participate in a thirty-minute phone interview.

Stipends

UELIP Associates serve as volunteers in the DCPS Central Office. Associates who demonstrate need may apply for an economic hardship stipend in the course of their application. Stipends will be awarded in amounts up to $500 for the fall and spring semesters, and up to $2,000 for the summer semester.

Applicants for the economic hardship stipend must complete these additional steps:

  1. Submit a transcript to:

  2. Economic Hardship Applicants must upload a word document answering the following 3 essay questions by the stated application deadlines. Each essay should be 300-500 words:

    A) Why do you believe you need this scholarship?
    B) What other scholarship avenues have you already (or are currently) exploring?
    C) How will doing this internship advance your career goals?
