About KIND: Thousands of children come to the United States each year without a parent or legal guardian. Children placed into immigration custody often face immigration court proceedings alone ‐ without the help of a lawyer. Many of these children have been victims of abuse, abandonment, neglect, human trafficking or persecution and have the right to stay in the United States—but need a lawyer to help them make their case in court and navigate the complexities of the U.S. legal system. KIND's mission is to find pro bono counsel for these children.
Fall Extern: KIND is seeking extern applicants for fall semester 2013 who are comfortable in written and spoken Spanish and English and who can commit to volunteering a minimum of one full 8 hour day per week in our office in downtown Los Angeles. (The ability to volunteer additional days is highly desirable.) Externs will have a chance to attend and assist in immigration and guardianship or child custody hearings, interact with families, attorneys, firms and government officials. This position is perfect for a student interested in children's or immigrants' rights, and allows the volunteer to make a difference while also building knowledge of the U.S. immigration system and its laws. Please note that this is an unpaid externship and parking cannot be provided by KIND.
