Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading nonprofit agency dedicated exclusively to serving the needs of domestic violence victims, sex trafficking victims, and their children. We offer a comprehensive, interconnected range of services including crisis and transitional shelter, individual and group counseling, legal services, economic empowerment services, a mentoring program, and a specialized program for children who have witnessed or experienced abuse.

Sanctuary for Families envisions a society in which freedom from domestic violence is a basic human right. We are dedicated to the safety, healing, and self-sufficiency of domestic violence victims, sex trafficking victims, and their children.

Sanctuary's Economic Empowerment Program is seeking an intern to play assist the Economic Empowerment Specialist with day-to-day program operations, training coordination, and administrative tasks. Responsibilities include assisting with management and coordination of on-site trainings and workshops, participant recruitment for EEP career development and office operations workshops, assisting with program administrative tasks, and classroom prep for workshops.

Responsibilities:

  • Create flyers, schedules, classroom materials and sign-in sheets for EEP workshop participants
  • Create and maintain client files and case documentation, keeping both paper and digital records up to date
  • Maintain spreadsheets and database tracking related to job placement, job retention, vocational and education outcomes, client enrollment, contact information, demographics, attendance, test scores, etc.
  • Assist in writing and compiling individual client grant applications to support program participant's needs while in training, as well as preparing and proofreading EEP reports
  • Assist with client check-in and serving dinner for evening workshops in early 2013
  • Perform other program or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor
  • Engage and communicate with clients in a positive, strength based manner which reinforces self-esteem and social growth
  • Facilitate client referrals to outside job training, vocational and/or educational resource

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in college to obtain Bachelors Degree required
  • Major in social sciences, or relevant area, or relevant work/volunteer experience preferred
  • Excellent analytical skills, organizational skills, and high level of attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and adhere to deadlines
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Sensitivity to the needs of underserved clients; an understanding of or interest in the issue of domestic violence; and cultural competency when working with a diverse population
  • Ability to work some evenings (Tuesdays and Wednesday) a plus
