Meals on Wheels People

Since 1970 Meals on Wheels People has provided a nutritional and social lifeline for seniors through 35 meal sites in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties and Meals on Wheels delivery to homebound seniors. With the help of more than 10,000 volunteers, the nonprofit organization now serves 5,000 meals daily and more than 1.2 million meals each year.

General Summary

Develop strategy and maintain social media presences for Meals on Wheels People. Social media consists of blogs and maintaining presence on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and others as appropriate. Research, write and post articles about nutrition, seniors and volunteers. Monitor social media use and create monthly/weekly reports. Promote Meals on Wheels People goals and objectives in written material. May contribute to monthly e-news.

This is an UNPAID internship and may involve working from home.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review, enhance and build on the organization's social media presence.
  • Perform continuous enhancements and modification to blogs and social media outlets, such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and others as appropriate.
  • Assess new standards, technologies and trends, and formulate plans for future enhancement to social media strategies.
  • Provide metrics of traffic statistics, reports and blog comment feedback.
  • Research, write, edit and create layout for new articles and features to appear online.
  • Interface collaboratively with marketing and IT to ensure cohesiveness between blogs and organization website.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Possess engaging "conversational" writing skills with a professional posture.
  • Must be computer and Internet/search engine savvy to perform online research.
  • Must thrive in fast-paced environment.
  • Must be proactive and have a strong proficiency with social media and practical learning to enhance internet presence for Meals on Wheels People.
  • Must be comfortable working in a virtual environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Technical

  • Ability to evaluate new and evolving social media technologies.
  • Solid understanding of all sections related to the anatomy of a blog, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and other social media.
  • Ability to utilize reporting tools for analysis of traffic, referral links and reader demographics.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current editing, authoring tools and related social media technologies.
  • Ability to utilize computerized word processing, blogging and internet software.
  • Solid foundation in search engine optimization (SEO) and implement RSS technology.
  • Knowledge and understanding of internet operations and functionality.
  • Skills in the use of computerized blog layout and design software.

Writing

  • Proofreading and editing skills
  • Ability to create, compose and edit written material in a style appropriate for the web
  • Ability to write simply with a conversational style.
  • Writing should be informative, but not verbose.

Business Savvy

  • Understand mission and vision of Meals on Wheels People.
  • Ability to incorporate corporate objectives, mission and vision throughout blog presentation.
  • Ability to make presentations on blog feedback, metrics and comments at business meetings.
  • Assist management in identifying opportunities, based on new developments in the blogsphere.
  • Maintain high ethics with blog presentation, content and daily work tasks.

Social Networking

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community.
  • Present professional, but friendly posture with blogsphere colleagues and throughout the Internet.
  • Provide management with intelligence from blog feedback, metrics and external discussions related to blog feedback, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and other social media networks
  • Act as ambassador and liaison for Meals on Wheels People to the Internet community.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Fast paced, with significant people interaction. No lifting over 20 pounds, minimal reaching, bending and stooping. Dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate computer keyboard and mouse.
