Applications are now open for the 2013 Humanitarian Assistance Africa Programmes run by Wits P&DM in collaboration with Medicines sans Frontiers/Doctors without Borders and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
The programme comprises two Certificates in Humanitarian Policy and Practice, with an option to convert these to a Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance. The certificates are intensive capacity development programmes that take a regional focus on tackling humanitarian issues across Africa. Using a variety of innovative teaching methods, they are designed and taught by experts from leading organisations and Academic Institutions such as ICRC, UNHCR, Oxfam, MSF, UNAIDS, and professors from LSTM and Wits University.

COURSE CONTENT
The Certificate in Humanitarian Policy covers a range of modules, such as: The political, social and economic contexts of the humanitarian environment; International humanitarian law and human rights; Disaster management and disaster risk reduction; Political analysis of complex and chronic emergencies; "Natural" disasters; Global climate change; Moving from disasters to development; Demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration; Child protection and children associated with armed conflict; The role of media in humanitarian crises; Advocacy vs Access
The Certificate in Humanitarian Practice covers a range of modules, such as: Priorities in emergency response; Project management and coordination; Logistics; Camp management; Human resources; Mobilising and managing financial resources; Minimum standards and accountability; Monitoring and evaluation; Responding to emergencies in urban settings; Public health and disease control; Vaccination campaigns; HIV/AIDS and TB in emergencies; Water and Sanitation; Environmental health and hygiene promotion; Sustainability of technical strategies
The certificates can be taken as stand-alone programmes or consecutively. After completing both certificates there is an option to attain a Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance through an examination with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

WHO ARE THEY DESIGNED FOR? The programmes are designed for practitioners and policy‐makers such as NGO workers, government staff, staff of multilaterals such as the UN, the media, civil society, donors and persons wishing to enter the humanitarian field
WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
A University degree or equivalent professional qualification/experience is required. There is space for approximately 10‐15 people from any one organization, particularly targeting senior staff from across the African region. There will be a maximum of about 50 students on the programme.
